A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
